In high school, my basketball coach “encouraged” us to run cross country to get in shape for basketball season. This is where my love of running began.
3.1 miles of meet distance was nothing compared to the miles we logged during practices. After high school, I forgot all about my love for running until after grad school when I moved to New York.
While living there, I casually picked up running again and couldn’t run more than a mile without lower back pain and being exhausted but I stuck with it. In 2014 I moved to Portland, OR. The Pacific Northwest is REALLY big on running.
While out running and having fun, I would notice packs of people running, but I never saw people of color running together. This type of community around running was lacking in Portland.
I said to myself, “Why don’t you start a black running group?” The iAmHealthyFit Running Club (iAHFRC) was started.
We started with four members in 2015 to over 30 current members. The only qualifications to join iAHFRC are a positive attitude and a willingness to push yourself. We have runners of all skill levels.
During the peak running season we run on (April-September) we run on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings. We look forward to seeing out on our next run.
We look forward to seeing you on our next run.
