How long before Crystal started seeing results – below is her response:

That’s a tough one and it varies by the type of result expected. 

By the second session, when I completed the exercises about my mom, I felt immediate relief from the hurt that I’ve been carrying all my adult life. 

I started feeling more hopeful about the future and more competent in my ability to get past the depression within the first month of working with you. 

It probably took 6 months until I stopped resisting “doing the work”. I would say that I was on a plateau but once I put forth real effort into practicing the change we talked about, then I started seeing more results.

How death inspires life with Death Doula Alua Arthur

It was roughly 2 pm and I was laying on my living room couch, trying to take a nap. I was home early from work because I wasn’t feeling well. My body was feeling discomfort or pain.

The phone rang, I answered.

On the other end, there was a voice, crying, hurting, I could feel the pain from her tone:

She blurted out “They’ve killed him, they’ve killed our Califa”.

The voice belongs to my mother, and the call came almost three years go to date this week.

Califa was my favorite uncle, the only person who growing up, loved me unconditionally. I didn’t have to meet any expectation to enjoy his love, and his death introduced to me to new depths of suffering, suffering that later turned in to healing.

After this experience I wondered:

  • Why don’t we talk about death?
  • Why do we run away from it?
  • And how can we prepare for it in a more conscious and intentional way?

 

My guest today:

Alua Arthur has some answers, answers I know you will find helpful. 

A death doula, attorney and the founder of going with grace, end of life planning organization that exists to support people as they answer the question:

‘What must I do to be at peace with myself so that I may live presently and die peacefully?’ 

Together we had a raw conversation about how death brought us back to life. Somehow during this episode, there were tears, laughter, and healing. She opened up about being severely depressed, she shared how she defines being authentic and spoke about her work, the beauty, the challenge, and the surrender.

After reading almost 100 books, I’ve paid close attention to what doesn’t change.

One of the messages that have remained constant in over 80% of the books I’ve read is:

You have to be fully present.

For a while, I didn’t understand what that meant.

But I kept reading.

Eckhart Tolle and Don Miguel Ruiz are two of the authors who I think break it down in a way that I can understand.

Now,

I finally feel like I have a clear definition of “being fully present.”

I am not claiming it is right or better than anything you’ve read.

It is the definition that connects with me, and it might connect with you too!

In this video, I break down what it means to be fully present and how you can practice it in your life.

Being present has the power to help you break free of the constant chatter in your mind, and worry less about both the past & the future.
