Ready to redefine success with intention?

Issa Book Review!

Today I am sharing my thoughts on:

Thrive – The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder by Arianna Huffington.

Overall this book focused on how putting yourself first if the first step to living the life of your dreams.

Here’s what I’ll cover in today’s video:

  • Why Thrive
  • A look into habits
  • Favorite sections

Here are some things that stood out to me:

First,

Thrive is a celebration of growth, awareness, and inner peace.

One of the things I love about this book is the depth of resources it includes.

I counted 40 – 50 different books, apps, and studies sprinkled throughout its 331 pages.

If you’re the type of person who is always looking for book recommendations, Thrive is full of them.

Second,

We’ve gone global, Sis!

Yep,

The whole world is raving about the power of taking care of yourself.

Arianna does a wonderful job, highlighting how the world is not only acknowledging the power of self-care but also encouraging its practice.

Of course, I am referring to the western world since the many Eastern countries been on this.

Third,

Practical applications.

Sometimes self-help books can fall flat when it comes to practicality.

Not this book.

Arianna explains the theory, science, and offers steps to start the work.

Which it’s very helpful to either a beginner or a more seasoned practician of self-mastery.

Thrive, it’s an excellent book for someone who wants an overview of what self-care looks like on a global scale.

You’ll walk away with tons of recommendations and research to help you decide where you want to go next.

Have you read Thrive? What did you think about it?

Book Review: The book that improved my marriage by 1000%

Book Review: The book that improved my marriage by 1000%

Something About Tendencies

In January 2017, JP, my husband, was struggling to communicate with me.

Three months prior, I was diagnosed with transitional depression in the midst of grieving the murder of my favorite uncle.

Our fun-filled evenings were replaced by constant arguments about me not doing the dishes and him trying to control me (at least that’s what my ego said).

Our marriage was suffering, and things had to change.

I knew it,

… and He knew it too.

Enter:

The 4 Tendencies

When JP read this book, he instantly became an evangelist.

Every other sentence, he would blur out:

“Gretchen says this…”

“Gretchen says that…”

Honestly, I didn’t care for it.

Six months later,

After I got tired of hearing him quote a woman who knew NOTHING about me,

I picked it up.

Here’s what I’ll cover in today’s short video:

  • Why JP(husband), started reading The 4 Tendencies,
  • What are the 4 tendencies,
  • How The 4 tendencies improved my marriage by 1000%,
  • How The 4 Tendencies can help you.

… and I was wrong.

Gretchen did know some things about me

It was like someone had recorded private footage of my life, down to the whole middle child thing, and sent it directly to Gretchen for review.

She not only watched it, and dissected it,

But she also wrote a whole book about it, and now I was holding it.

It was a personality profile book, but it didn’t feel like other similar books I’ve read before.

Gretchen did her homework, and it showed.

Since reading this book,

I’ve re-read it three times, including both with JP and the B-Word Chronicles (my book club).

It’s one of the books I recommend to everyone  I meet, and my students have all find it incredibly insightful.

Warning.

Like any self-help book,

I cannot recommend The 4 Tendencies without a disclaimer,

If you read this book,

You will learn a lot of helpful information about yourself and the people around you.

Don’t stop there.

I’ve found that what truly changes the game,

What improved my marriage by 1000%,

Came down to everything we did with that information.

For example,

JP learned that he couldn’t make me do something I didn’t want to do.

So, he stopped trying.

He even stopped stressing over the dishes.

It turns out he didn’t like all that nagging either

It was exhausting.

The result:

Once he left me alone

I started doing the dishes, not because he wanted me to, but because I wanted to.

We like to think we’re these super-rational humans,

Spoiler,

We’re not.

Not as much as we would like to think, anyway.

The more aware we become of this fact,

The more likely we will be of manifesting our dream life

Tools like The 4 Tendencies can help us make it happen.

Is our biggest fear to die or to live?

Is our biggest fear to die or to live?

Self-Awareness.

For 30 years, I was convinced dying was my biggest fear. When I get to the end of my rope I don’t want to feel like I didn’t live to my fullest potential.

I held on to this belief like a newborn to its mother until 2018.

When Don Miguel Ruiz turned my beliefs upside down, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air style.

During episode 12 of the podcast – How to be the best version of yourself, I asked my guest Delilah Cruz, to share a tool that had been indispensable to her self-care.

Without thinking, she said: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.

Shortly after the episode aired, I picked up the book, and my life was never the same.

The book begins with an introduction to the Toltecs,

A society of scientists and artist committed to explore and conserve the spiritual knowledge and practices of the ancient ones in Mexico.

Immediately I am moved by the idea that we’re artists, and our life is our canvas.

Don Miguel Ruiz is a descendant of the Toltecs and, through his books, reveals their powerful teachings.

From the introduction, Ruiz sets the tone for this book,

“The real us is pure love, pure light.”

At the time I was intrigued by this line,

Although full transparency, I didn’t fully understand it.

Chapter 1: Domestication and the Dream of the Planet.

Chapter 1 brings our attention to what he calls:

Domestication and the Dream of the Planet.

A few things stand out here:

  • The way we learn everything is through repetition,
  • From an early age, we learn what to believe and not believe,
  • We judge ourselves and others for not following the rules.

But perhaps the real eye-opener was the quote below.

“Death is not the biggest fear we have; our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive – the risk to be alive and express what we really are.”

Here’s where everything changed for me.

I wondered,

Was I terrified to live?

It turns out Ruiz was more spot-on than I cared or wanted to admit.

If you’re new to the world of self-awareness, when you reach this point in the book, you have a decision to make.

Because there’s no going back if you keep reading.

Chapters 2 – 5: The Four Agreements.

  • Be Impeccable with Your Word.
  • Don’t Take Anything Personally.
  • Don’t Make Assumptions.
  • Always Do Your Best.

Watch the video for a deep dive into each of these chapters.

Here’s what I cover:

  • How the Four Agreements helped me through depression.
  • How taking things personally impacted my marriage.
  • The problem with making assumptions.
  • How doing our best avoids burnout.

My recommendation,

Take your time as you review each agreement.

Allow yourself the space to make peace with their discomfort and give yourself permission to be challenged in a kind & compassionate way.

The first time I reviewed the agreements, I became aware of how much I struggled with taking responsibility for my actions.

I understood why taking everything my husband did personally was hurting our marriage, and I walked away with strategies to release that burden.

These agreements are simple but not easy.

… And it is that simplicity, paired with the discomfort that comes from taking action that makes this book so powerful.

Chapters 6 – 7: Implementation

Ruiz ends the book with a closer look at how to break old agreements that don’t serve you and make room for the Four Agreements.

He outlines a step-by-step process to tap into your inner warrior to take action and unlock your most authentic self.

The most beautiful part of this process is that you can control it. Your success doesn’t depend on anything outside yourself. It lies in your ability to turn inward and build your strength with inner guidance, by leaning into self-awareness.

Self-Awareness is the mother of healing.

Since the first time I read this book in 2018, I’ve re-read it every 3 – 6 months.

Every time I receive its lessons, I see why self-awareness is the mother of healing.

Without it,

It would be impossible to understand why the four agreements are so important, and we wouldn’t be in a space to be available to execute them.

Everything begins with self-awareness.

The Four Agreements invite you to experience freedom differently.

At first glance, this can be an easy invitation to dismiss.

After all, healing comes with its fair share of discomfort and change. There is a reason we shy away from anything unfamiliar.

It doesn’t feel pleasant or safe.

But when you accept this invitation,

You create room for long-lasting inner peace, joy, and unconditional love.

The type of love that words cannot articulate; it can only be felt with the heart.

Final Thoughts

“Imagine living your life without fear of expressing your dreams. You know what you want, what you don’t want, and when you want it. You are free to change your life the way you really want to. You are not afraid to ask for what you need, to say yes or no to anything or anyone.”

I know this is possible because it is what happened to me.

Death is around the corner, but life is here and now.

It all begins with self-awareness.

Hasta Luego,
